Why do I need a website?

Most companies and institutions, including professionals and small or home-based businesses, should consider a website. It puts your enterprise on the digital map, so to speak. A website can be a very effective tool for communication, advertising, sales, and marketing. Here are just a few reasons why a website can be such a powerful tool.

Before you continue, consider these statistics:

  • Worldwide there are almost 200 million people on the Internet. In the United States alone, 80 million. A third of wired Americans now do at least some of their shopping on the Net... By 2003 more than 500 million people will be surfing the Web. Americans with Net access spend an average of 8.8 hours a week online. News sites are the most popular; then travel, weather, music and technology. Half of all adults now have access to the Internet either at home or at work.
  • In the US, it took radio 38 years, and TV 13 years, to reach an audience of 50 million. But, according to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, Vol. 71, no. 259, 4/16/98, ``The number of Web users in the US has reached 50 million in just four years.''
  • Two billion orders will be placed over the Internet this year.
  • E-commerce revenue will be $95 billion by the end of this year and will exceed $1 trillion by 2002.

Now consider the main advantages of the Internet/Web:

Low Entry Cost

A Website is a store or office that is open to the entire world 24 hours a day, 7 days a week---all for a small fraction of the cost of a real office or store. Customers can contact you by email directly from your Website. They can even purchase your products and services right from you Website.
Email
Together with your Website, you'll also get email accounts for yourself and key employees. For less than $20/month, with most Internet Access Providers (IAP), you can have unlimited access the to the Web and e-mail. You can start off with just using electronic mail (e-mail) as a way to communicate with existing customers and new ones. Send email instead of phoning, faxing, or mailing and save long-distance charges and postage. While you're at it, you can "attach" pictures and other documents to your email. For example, you can send a proposal or quotation at the speed of light.
Attracting Customers
Describe your company logo, products, business, and services on your website. Answer common questions, list contact information, and give directions (including a map if you wish) to your store. Do all this without answering a phone or hiring additional staff.
Global Reach
Your developer will list your new website with a good number of search engines so your site can be easily reached by everyone on the Web. The Internet is being used on a regular basis by millions worldwide with more "connecting" every day. Many of the new users come from countries around the world. They want to buy the "latest and greatest" products and services. They have money. With your website they can become customers! How much do you think it would cost you to advertise in foreign countries? Compare that to the cost of a website. The information you provide on your website is instantly available to every one of these users. And you can revise and update the information on your site with little effort.
Foreign Customers
Why restrict your market to your native country? Translate your website into a number of languages and offer a choice to users when they come to your home page to further increase your exposure.
Conduct Business Anywhere
With your website and email you can do business from your office, your home, your hotel room, or on the beach! You can easily hire workers who are not in the same city. You can use more part-time people or allow employees to work at home sometimes.
Time is Money
With the speed and the immediate nature of the Web and Internet, you can make things happen in real time. You can avoid traditional business delays in many situations. Send an important document to a customer, and it is there within seconds. Put up a page on your website for a special sale and the message is out instantly. You can also send your message by email to a large number of people at once, with about the same effort as sending one email.
I t is possible to build a website by yourself or by hiring a student. But would you trust an apprentice to build your home? Is this really the place to pinch a penny? Or you can go with big companies that advertise on national TV. But they will piece together a site for you from pre-made components, like a prefabricated house. Get a professional developer for a custom-built site, and you won't regret it.

Every business is different, so is every website. Webtong offers a free consultation to determine your needs and wants. Then we'll work with you to build a site that will be just right for you.

What must I do to get a website?

  1. Do yourself a favor, pick a good developer. A child can write HTML code but designing a site takes expertise, skill, and experience. Webtong has extraordinary competence and reasonable pricing. Let us help you. See our portfolio page for some sample sites.
  2. Apply for a domain name such as superstore.com. Think up several names ... it is likely you will not get your first choice. Take your time ... this domain name becomes your identifier! See our domain name registration page for help. Domain name registration is free if we build your site.
  3. Carefully outline and organize the material you want to place on the web. It's like writing a report. You have the cover (the homepage), descriptions, pictures, and diagrams. The textual content on your web pages is usually referred to as copy. Unless you wish to pay extra for data entry, you should prepare your "copy" using a word processor so it is ready to go on your web pages. Begin with your existing promotional material and you can get organized quickly. Your website developer will structure your material into a logically organized site. The developer will also do page layout and graphics design to present your copy and pictures attractively.
  4. Decide on the "look" of your pages. Browse the Web for ideas. Bring your company brochure, stationary, and logo to your developer.
  5. Your website can provide free information and resources to attract visitors. Then you gently steer the visitor to the products and services you sell.
  6. Your website must be fast loading, clear with its message, easy to read, and simple to use. Otherwise, a visitor will simply leave. A good developer may use visual communication designers to enhance your business image and present your messages effectively.

How do I publicize my website?

  • Ask your developer for ways to publicize your website. Submitting your site to a good number of search engines is normally part of your developer's service. Our search engine submission page can be useful if you wish to do this yourself.
  • Add your URL, the fashionable www.yourcompany.com, to your business card, stationary, and literature.
  • Include the URL at the end of every piece of out-going email, together with all the other contact information you provide.
  • Include your URL in any advertisement you make.
  • Get your URL listed in any appropriate trade websites for your type of business.
  • Create referral banners to be placed on other websites. You can give certain incentives for other sites to include your banner.
  • Hold contests, conduct drawings, or give prizes on your website.

How do I accept credit cards online?

You need to have a business banking account and doing business as a legal entity. Then apply for a Merchant Account to accept credit cards and a real-time online approval/confirmation system to make e-commerce a reality.

See our E-Commerce Page for details and for super deals.
